ROBOTICS 4.0, in partnership with Corporación Universitaria del Huila (CORHUILA), is developing a teleoperated robot to clean stormwater channels in buildings up to 15 m high. Limited environmental perception, confined channel geometry, and the operator’s lack of direct visibility may cause collisions with walls and obstacles. This research developed a depth-camera-based visual sensing system to segment the environment and estimate distances during robot navigation. The methodology comprised selecting an OAK-D Pro PoE camera, constructing a prototype channel based on the dimensions of the real scenario, and implementing a pipeline that combines FastSAM with depth information. The system was evaluated using images from the real channel in Colombia, physical measurements in the prototype, and a temporal comparison between FastSAM and SAM. FastSAM correctly segmented 78.051 % of the 1,745 evaluated images. In the prototype, the average error between estimated and measured distances was 4.525 × 10−3 m. The integrated pipeline achieved 0.84 FPS and detected an average of five masks per frame. At the robot’s operating speed, this update rate corresponds to an approximate displacement of 5.95 cm without a new perception update, equivalent to nearly 10 % of the robot’s length. These results demonstrate the technical feasibility of the system and support the selection of FastSAM over SAM for this application.
