In this research work, feedback control systems are implemented to regulate the speed and position of a brushless DC motor, as well as the temperature generated by a heating resistor. The implementations employ Machine Learning techniques, specifically Gaussian Process Regression and an Anticipative Neural Network (ANN), in order to predict the response of the system’s physical variables. Subsequently, the optimal parameters of the Proportional–Integral–Derivative (PID) controller are determined using a gradient descent–based approach. For comparison purposes, control systems based on a conventional PID controller are also developed. System simulations are carried out in MATLAB/- Simulink, and the experimental implementations are performed on the Siemens Training Suitcase available in the Control Systems Laboratory of the University of Engineering and Technology. In addition, a control architecture aligned with the ISA-95 standard is implemented, consisting of a PLC, a laptop acting as an Edge Computing device, and an HMI, while also considering the guidelines of the ISA-101 standard for supervision and monitoring. The Edge Computing device executes the PID control systems with and without Machine Learning and communicates with the PLC via the OPC UA protocol using KEPServerEX software. The results indicate that the PID controller optimized using Gaussian Process Regression achieves slightly better performance than the PID controller optimized with the Anticipative Neural Network, while both demonstrate a clear improvement compared to the conventional PID controller.
