Cutting fluids in machining processes perform functions related to friction reduction, heat dissipation in the cutting zone, and improved surface finish of the workpiece. In industrial applications, these fluids are primarily synthetic and are supplied via flooding systems with flow rates of 5 to 20 L/min, resulting in surfaces with residual fluid, mist formation, and conditions that can affect the work environment. In particular, operator exposure to vapors and direct contact with the synthetic fluid ASHBURN APEX 7030 WG can be associated with dermatological and respiratory problems due to the additives in its formulation. Furthermore, its use entails costs associated with maintenance, recirculation, and final disposal. In this context, this thesis evaluates the performance of a biodegradable vegetable oil as an alternative to the synthetic fluid. The lubricant is applied using the Minimum Quantity Lubricant (MQL) technique, with a typical flow rate of 50 to 100 mL/h and a compressed air pressure of 4 to 7 bar. This facilitates its penetration into the tool-chip interface and the formation of a lubricating film that reduces the coefficient of friction. The experimental evaluation is performed on a face milling operation of AISI P20 steel. Surface roughness (Ra) is analyzed according to ISO 21920-2:2021, using a factorial design. Wear on TiAlN-coated (PVD) carbide inserts is also qualitatively evaluated. The results show an average reduction of 15% in roughness when using coconut oil with MQL. Additionally, abrasive wear and the formation of continuous helical chips are identified.
