In the present thesis work, a multivariable fractional-order control system is implemented to simultaneously regulate the level and temperature within a water tank. This tank receives both cold and hot water flows through two pipelines, which are mixed inside the tank, producing a warm water output for subsequent use. This process, referred to as a water tank system, considers the cold and hot water flow rates as inputs, manipulated through two control valves, while the outputs correspond to the tank level and the outlet water temperature. The main challenge addressed in this thesis lies in the interaction between the process variables, since controlling the level directly affects the temperature and vice versa. This interaction problem cannot be effectively solved using independent control loops, as the system exhibits complex dynamic behavior that is not adequately handled by conventional controllers. To address this issue, a conventional integer-order PID control system is first developed, serving as a basis for the design of the fractional-order controller. The integer-order control system is designed using a mathematical model of the process. Both controllers are programmed and implemented on an industrial ControlLogix controller from Allen-Bradley. Finally, the operational methodology of the control algorithms is presented, along with experimental results that demonstrate the superior performance of the fractional-order controller compared to the integer-order approach.
