This study presents a proposal for a lower-limb power-assist exoskeleton designed to mitigate muscle overload or fatigue in mining drillers. These musculoskeletal disorders are the leading causes of chronic injuries such as muscle strains, among others. As a result, many workers nationwide experience a decline in their health and lose work hours due to muscle, joint, or bone injuries. The main objective is to design, model, and validate a prototype that, when performing partial and full squats, can reduce the level of muscle activity at each stage of the work. The scope of the project is limited to two drilling exercises simulated kinematically in a laboratory environment. The main results included the mechanical design of the lower-limb exoskeleton for each leg, involving only knee and ankle flexion and extension movements. The exoskeleton was equipped with electromyographic sensors to measure muscle activity and inertial sensors to measure angular kinematics. In addition, an external module was used to measure the user’s balance based on their center of pressure. The exoskeleton was able to accommodate the user’s range of motion in the sagittal plane, with deviations of approximately 10◦ in most of the cases evaluated. The center of pressure did not deviate by more than approximately 1 cm on average, and muscle load reduction ranged from 6 % to 90 % during certain phases of the exercise.
