Resumen
Failures along road slopes and hillsides are the major nuisance for travelers and road planners as they put human lives at risk along with monetary losses. Analysis of these vulnerable cut slopes involves evaluation and estimation of appropriate material strength input parameters and discontinuities to be used in the models by the limit equilibrium method to achieve a holistic stability examination. For the present study, a slope cut into a road made up of slate rocks approximately 69 m high in the province of Pallasca, Ancash region, has been considered. Several slate samples were tested in the laboratory and the resistance parameters of both the material and the discontinuities evaluated by the limit equilibrium method were used. For resistance, the Hoek and Brown failure criterion has been incorporated for the case of intact rock and the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion for discontinuities. The investigation by the limit equilibrium method provided the value of the safety factor. The result of this analysis shows that the critical zone is prone to recurrent failures between the weaker slate material and the high-strength slate rock. Due to external and internal geodynamics, they can accelerate slope collapse in this area. The study also suggests using preventive measures to avoid future landslides on the unstable slope.
